Water Monitoring – Redevelopment of Pier VI, Port of Trieste
From October 2024 to October 2026, we are implementing an extensive environmental monitoring program as part of the redevelopment and reconstruction works of Pier VI at the Port of Trieste. The activities focus on turbidity and water quality monitoring, in full compliance with the Environmental Monitoring Plan and current Italian environmental regulations (D.Lgs. 152/2006, D.M. 173/2015, D.M. 489/2015), under the supervision of ARPA FVG.
The program is structured into the three standard monitoring phases:
-
Pre-construction (ante operam): two monitoring campaigns were carried out to establish baseline turbidity and key physico-chemical parameters of the water column. A multiparameter probe with turbidity sensor was installed near the quay, providing threshold values for comparison in later phases.
-
During works (in corso d’opera): throughout construction, the multiparameter probe remains in continuous operation, recording and transmitting data at regular intervals. In addition to turbidity, the system measures wind, temperature, pH, redox potential, conductivity, salinity, dissolved oxygen, suspended solids, and chlorophyll, ensuring real-time environmental control and enabling rapid mitigation measures if agreed thresholds are exceeded.
-
Post-construction (post operam): following completion, monitoring continues for one year through two 15-day continuous campaigns, conducted every six months. These activities verify the return of turbidity and water quality to baseline levels and confirm the absence of lasting impacts on the marine ecosystem.
In accordance with contractual agreements with the Port Authority, the monitoring service will continue for an additional year beyond the post-construction phase, resulting in a total duration of two years.
This structured approach, combined with the use of state-of-the-art multiparameter probes, ensures continuous oversight of the marine environment during all stages of the Pier VI redevelopment, safeguarding compliance with regulatory requirements and protecting the surrounding ecosystem.
Duration: October 2024 to October 2026
Client: Port Authority of Trieste
