Environmental Monitoring – Terrazza a Mare Redevelopment, Lignano Sabbiadoro
Since October 2024, we were carrying out continuous turbidity monitoring as part of the redevelopment and safety works of the Terrazza a Mare in Lignano Sabbiadoro. This activity is governed by the approved Environmental Monitoring Plan (ref. 1392-E_AM_A0_R01 – Environmental Feasibility Study) and implemented in accordance with Regional Decree no. 9963/GRFVG of 10/03/2023.
Monitoring operations are conducted at two control stations (M_TM_01 and M_TM_02), located near the work site, where two probes are installed to measure turbidity levels continuously throughout the water column. The collected data define reference values in the pre-construction phase, detect any variations during works, and verify conditions in the post-construction phase.
Turbidity monitoring is complemented by bathing water quality data provided by ARPA FVG to ensure consistency with institutional coastal water surveillance systems. The monitoring plan also includes biological surveys of key benthic communities, such as the Adriatic clam (Chamelea gallina) and the razor clam (Ensis minor), to assess food availability and detect possible ecotoxicological effects.
This monitoring framework extends throughout the entire duration of the works:
-
Pre-construction: to establish baseline conditions
-
During works: continuous turbidity controls for the full length of the construction site
-
Post-construction: monitoring for a period agreed with the authorities, ensuring that turbidity returns within regulatory limits
The redevelopment project, led by architects João Luís Carrilho da Graça and Giulia de Appolonia, represents a €14 million investment by the Region. It includes a new infinity pool, expanded public spaces with a beach club and restaurant, and a restored panoramic view of the sea. Completion is scheduled for summer 2026.
Duration:October 2024 to summer 2026
Client: Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia (FVG)
